"HÉROES" is an ongoing series dedicated to real dogs whose extraordinary stories have left a mark.
Some saved lives in earthquakes, disasters and rescue missions. Others became symbols of loyalty, courage, companionship or resilience. Each portrait begins with a true story and is reinterpreted through Makinucci’s visual language, combining illustration, symbolism and elements inspired by the places, cultures and events connected to each dog.
The collection begins with Tsunami and Orión, two remarkable rescue dogs whose stories embody courage and an extraordinary connection with human life. The gallery will continue to grow, welcoming other unforgettable dogs from around the world, including Frida, the celebrated Mexican rescue dog, Hachikō, remembered in Japan as an enduring symbol of loyalty, and many others whose lives became part of our collective memory.
HÉROES is conceived as an evolving visual archive, celebrating the many forms heroism can take, from an extraordinary act of courage to a lifetime of devotion.
Original artworks and selected works from the series are available for art licensing, prints, editorial and commercial illustration, and special collaborations.
The word "T0TEM" traditionally refers to an animal, plant or natural being that holds a symbolic relationship with a human group, becoming an emblem of identity, ancestry, protection or belonging. Beyond its specific anthropological origins, the idea of the totem evokes something deeply human: the transformation of nature into symbol, and of the animal into a bearer of stories and meaning.
Throughout her numerous travels, Makinucci has encountered different countries, cultures and visual traditions, revisiting their legends and folklore to gradually elaborate her own bestiary.
Animals that have crossed mythology, popular belief and collective imagination are reinterpreted through Makinucci’s visual language. Their symbolic identity remains present, while their forms are dismantled and reconstructed through ornament, pattern, symmetry and hybridization.
The animal remains recognizable, yet begins to inhabit another territory, somewhere between folkloric figure, decorative object and invented mythology. Rather than simply illustrating existing legends, T0TEM takes their visual and symbolic vocabulary as a starting point for creating new identities and narratives.
Each illustrated creature also becomes the origin of a broader visual family. Patterns, ornamental details, secondary figures and decorative compositions are extracted and developed from the original artwork, expanding each animal into a collection of interconnected designs. These elements can exist independently or be recombined across different formats and applications.
The result is an evolving contemporary bestiary, shaped by travel, cultural encounters and the continuous reinterpretation of the symbolic animal world.
The gallery presented above represents only a small part of this expanding collection. New creatures and their corresponding visual families will gradually be added, allowing TOTEM to grow over time both as an illustration project and as a collectible body of work.
The series is available for illustration commissions and art licensing, with its characters, patterns and decorative elements adaptable to editorial projects, textiles, surface design, objects and selected commercial collaborations.
For collectors, individual works from the series will also progressively become available as fine art giclée prints and original works on selected materials, allowing the bestiary to be collected and expanded over time.
